The first registrations were started in September 2006, and the notion behind this domain name extension is that all websites that use it are required to comply with specific requirements. In other words, all dot MOBI websites have to be created to be accessed correctly by mobile devices in accordance with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” formulated by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in cooperation with the .MOBI Registry organization. These have to do with how a website is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), and so on.

The rules have provoked some worries taking into account that the generic top-level extension is the only one that specifies what devices need to be able to access a website and the way in which this should happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a web page should be designed in such a way as to be viewed by the majority of Internet browsers and devices, be they mobile or stationary.
